Age related memory changes? Early Onset Alzheimer’s? Fatigue? Brain fart? I am not sure what was responsible for what I did at work Saturday night, but I hope I can blame it something other than just being an airhead.
I was working at the hospital Saturday evening and one of my patients was a little kid. One thing I like about the small hospital is, that on any given night, my patients can range from infants to elderly. Our hospital is not good, however, in keeping up with supplies for pediatric patients . Things like stickers and small toys are in short supply. So, occasionally I will buy things I find at the dollar store or from a party supply store etc. and bring them to work. I knew I had some packets of new crayons and a few new little toys in my vehicle that night, so after I had my supper, at around 7PM, I went out to my van to get them.
The toys were in a bag in the way back part of my van. It was dark out and unless one of the van side doors is open, no light will come on in the hatch back. I opened the driver side door so the light would come on, left it open, went around to the back and retrieved the goods. I then went around to the passenger side door, opened it and pressed the lock so the van would be locked. I wouldn’t want to leave it unlocked, especially since we have had some minor thievery recently at the hospital. The week before, someone stole the nurses coffee money and another night someone stole a nurses wallet!
I returned to work and gave some treats to the patient. Well worth the effort of going to my van to get them, because I was subsequently rewarded with many lovely pieces of artwork. I finished my shift at around Midnight and headed out to the parking lot. First thing I noticed was a truck with it’s lights on and two men standing beside it. Next I noticed the trucks lights were facing my driver side door…WHICH WAS OPEN! WIDE OPEN! I grasped my pepper spray tighter in my hand, as if I was planning on fighting off two grown men attempting to steal my van. (I watch way too much Buffy) I walked a little closer and I recognized the two guys as the night shift janitors, then it dawned on me. I left my door open! ohhhhh nooooo. The janitors asked me if I knew whose van this was and even though I wanted to deny it, I fessed up. I got in and right away checked to see if anything was stolen. PHEW, nothing was missing, my CD’s, my spare change, and even my phone were all still there. WOW! My door was wide open for 5 hours and not a thing was missing. (Except my pride maybe)The van even started, no dead battery. The guys told me someone had called in to report a vehicle with its door open in the parking lot and they came out to check it. I bet they had a good laugh that night. “Heh, heh and she’s the charge nurse, what an airhead(loser)!”
As the title of this posts implies, this was not the first time I did this. Around a year ago, I went grocery shopping with T and left one of the van side doors open. My hus, after work, came along to pick up some beer or something and noticed the door wide open. He told me it scared him because he immediately feared we were kidnapped. Then he saw us coming out of the store! And nothing was stolen that time either.
I really hope I don’t do it again.

It's the same with convertibles. Every time I see one on the street out here, they have all their stuff out, money, glasses, cups etc.
The open van door probably scared them all to death. It could look like a trap for someone to peek in and then get grabbed!
You are too hilarious about the Buffy comment. We all have moments like that, it just a good thing that you were OK and the van as well.
I didn't realize you were a Buffy fan. I like you even more now! Even if you leave your van door open for five hours.
Well, at least you didn't lock your keys inside, right?
sounds like something I would do :-)
I think Suzy might be on to something with the open door-trap appearance.
When I was a kid, I came home from school one afternoon to hear my parents' clock radio blaring upstairs. I was a very fearful child, so I immediately concluded that a rapist was hiding upstairs, waiting for me to come up and turn the radio off. So I played outside until my parents came home.
Seriously...I'm laughing WITH ya. And if you have early onset, I'm there, too. :)
BTW - Suzy's comment cracked me up!
I am horrible at leaving my purse in all sorts of places. I can be very forgetful sometimes.
one time i was volunteering at school and the front office lady was searching the school for the idiot (me) who left their van door wide open. my question? why did no one simply CLOSE our doors?
Boy, I would have been freaked out seeing two men standing outside my van at night too. Pepper spray, whoa, don't mess with you!!!
I've been having brain farts lately too. Spent an hour looking for a CD that was in the case the whole time yesterday morning.
Maybe it's the cold weather and it has frozen our brains... the other day I was having a converation with one of John's co-workers. He asked who my favorite authors were and I totally drew a blank. I said "you know, the creepy one who isn't Stephen King". (That would be Dean Koontz.) "And, that guy who writes normal stuff that they make into movies." (That would be John Grisham)I can't believe I actually said those things!
Pepper Spray Vs. 2 Men? You ar much braver than I!
Great story even if it is your life! hmmm sounds familiar though .. I know i have done things like this... but i am more the lock the keys in the car type. My son's car - you have to get in it from the passenger side, so i try to leave the driver door open just a crack when i go shopping. its a piece of junk.
