Roller Skate Mama

E had her roller skate birthday party and all the girls, even grown up girls, had a blast. It was so much fun skating with the young girls. For some it was their first time skating. They all did really well. No major injuries occurred!
The music was perfect for skating...Fleetwood Mac, ELO, REO Speedwagon and of course the ultimate skating song Lynyrd Skynyrds FREEE BIIRD, Yeah! Oh, wait, having a flash back, that was the music played when I went skating as a pre-teenie bopper, not now.
I used to love roller skating. I went twice a week to USA Skate in West Springfield Mass with my friends. I remember the 'Couples Skate' 'Backwards Only' 'Boys or Girls Only' and of course the 'All Night Skate'. I remember my roller skates were soo cool. White with hot pink sparkled wheels. I could just skate and skate and skate. I had nice legs back then.
As usual memories are bitter sweet. My 6Th grade boyfriend broke up with me at a roller skate party, then had the nerve to ask for the necklace back he gave me for Valentines Day! JERK! No, I did not give it back. I kept it and cried for weeks. Then got a better boyfriend.
I wish the rink we had E's birthday party at was closer, because I would definitely go back frequently.
Do any of you have roller skating memories? I would love to hear them.

I never had any good balance. I fell once at a rink and never went back. But you're killing me with these music flashbacks!!

REO SPEEDWAGON ROCKS!!

I used to skate in Central Park in NYC when it became the rage. I still have my roller skates. Just can't part with them.

I can't believe you were smart enough to not give that necklace back.

I always sucked at skating (I'm a total klutz) but went to the roller rink every Friday night anyway.

That skating rink is now a church...

that is SOME cake! great work!

my new skates have been well broken-in by the 5 year old, and the bearings are already glutted with dog hair.

I love that they skated to retro music! In the '70s, when I was like 8 or something, we always wanted the DJ to play "Love Rollercoaster" --the extended version, which had a longer instrumental intro. The teenaged girls wore striped knee-high athletic socks and satin shorts with tube tops. And they always had someone to skate with during the "couples skate".

Oh god "couples skate!" The horror! The excitement! All in one!

Damn, I need a drink.

I remember that I was so stoked to have shoelaces with my name on them. I wore them IN MY HAIR. Gag.

Great. You just HAD to post about roller skating...didn't you?

I'm sooooo sensitive to the power of suggestion, and NOW I WANT TO GO ROLLER SKATING!

Honestly...here in Dallas, I don't even know where a skating rink is located....

I only went to the rink once in my life. I was probably ten years old and it was my friends birthday party. I got knocked over many times by other people because I was so damn slow. Needless to say, I never went back. Anyway roller skating at the rink wasn't really "in" when I was little. :) But I was so lame to have the metal kind that strapped to your shoes.

hey thanks for stopping by...my rollerskating memories all consist of me getting hurt because i was really good at going straight but i could never do the criss cross turn and boom! I would crash. I took my daughter skating for the first time 1 month ago and as I'm holding on to her and two of her friends, guess what happened? they wanted fast, I gave them fast...and then it was like bowling pin action.
